Thanks to its technology and innovative spirit, FONDA has the capacity to develop tools such as Leddles, hypercorrective eyewear that projects a frontal beam of light to enable reading and writing anywhere with perfect illumination, and Fit Macula, equipped with PRLoop lenses, which frees the central vision of patients affected by age-related macular degeneration and other retinal diseases by shifting the image to the healthy part of the retina. Aligned with this scientific approach, the company contributes to innovation in both the clinical and technological fields through research projects in collaboration with universities, research institutions, and the non-profit sector.

The company takes its name from Gerald Fonda, the American ophthalmologist who first understood how to optimize the residual vision of patients with advanced vision disease, such as low vision, enabling them to maintain a degree of autonomy. 

Until that point, these patients were often considered beyond recovery and were primarily instructed in the use of canes and Braille. 

Biagio Jurilli brought the best practices he learned at Dr. Fonda’s clinic to Italy, applying them in his optical center in Genoa. 

It was there that the insight developed that intervening with appropriate aids from the onset of the pathology could yield significant benefits for the individual. Inspired by Fonda’s work, Michele Jurilli, Biagio’s son, began promoting the concept of Fragile Vision®, addressing, for the first time, even those in the early stages of the disease. 

This led FONDA to register the “Vista Fragile” trademark, which is now widely used in the optics sector. People diagnosed with complex ophthalmic diseases face a difficult and tiring journey, but, and this is FONDA’s second key insight, timely intervention can help maintain visual ability. 

This gave rise to the concept of “functional prevention,” which involves stimulating the patient’s visual function through continuous vision training with specific tools, such as high-magnification lenses, and close coordination between the ophthalmologist and the optician to support medical therapies with a form of “early rehabilitation”.

Functional prevention, therefore, is a set of solutions that, when adopted from the onset of the first symptoms of the pathology, can actively influence the progression of visual decline.
