When a press brake or shear is scrapped, it creates tons of waste that is difficult to recycle. This then forces more materials to be extracted from the planet and additional energy to be used to remake a machine that will have more than 90% of the same characteristics as the one that was just destroyed.
Most of the time, however, these large machines are not disposed of, but start passing from hand to hand. They are resold to rather needy companies where they will continue to function for another several decades, not retrofitted, inevitably causing work accidents whose human and social damage will never be quantifiable.
The ultimate end of these press brakes or shears is “cannibalisation”, which they undergo in order to repair other “twins” machines, while the remaining non-usable parts will end up lying hypothetically forever “dumped” somewhere, sometimes even left to pollute beaches or forests…
