Prosecco: The World’s Best-Selling Sparkling Wine and a Symbol of Italian Excellence

In the vast universe of global wine, one name sparkles brighter than the rest: Prosecco. Originating from the rolling hills of northeastern Italy, Prosecco has evolved from a local tradition into the best-selling sparkling wine in the world, loved for its freshness, elegance, and unmistakable Italian charm.

A Global Icon of Italian Wine

In 2024, Prosecco confirmed its supremacy on the international stage: over 660 million bottles were produced, with a staggering 80% exported to more than 140 countries. Key markets like the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France continue to show double-digit growth, making Prosecco not only a cultural phenomenon but a global business success.

DOC and DOCG: Two Levels of Excellence

Prosecco is not a single wine, but a protected denomination that includes different levels of quality, all regulated and certified:

  • Prosecco DOC
Established in 2009, this designation covers a vast area that includes 9 provinces across the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. The DOC area was recently expanded, allowing controlled production in additional provinces like Verona, Vicenza, and Padua, helping meet global demand while maintaining quality standards.

  • Prosecco DOCG – Conegliano Valdobbiadene & Asolo
The heart and soul of high-quality Prosecco lies in the historic hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, and the Asolo area. These are UNESCO World Heritage landscapes where hand-harvested Glera grapes grow on steep, sun-drenched slopes. Wines from this zone are labeled DOCG – the highest classification in Italian wine law – and offer more complexity, structure, and aging potential.

A Wine with Many Faces

While commonly known for its Extra Dry or Brut styles, Prosecco is surprisingly versatile:

  • Prosecco Spumante (fully sparkling)

  • Prosecco Frizzante (lightly sparkling)

  • Prosecco Tranquillo (still, rare)

  • Prosecco Rosé DOC (introduced in 2020), made with a small blend of Pinot Noir — now wildly popular especially among younger consumers.

Each style caters to different palates and occasions, making Prosecco a favorite across demographics and dining cultures.

A Powerhouse of Export and Value

Prosecco is more than just Italy’s sparkling treasure — it’s a commercial engine. According to recent data from the Prosecco DOC Consortium:

  • The Prosecco DOC alone generated over €3 billion in export value in 2023.

  • Prosecco DOCG wines — though representing a smaller volume — are growing rapidly in premium markets, with price points and recognition comparable to Champagne.

This growth is not just due to its affordability, but to the quality, branding, and emotional appeal of a wine that has become synonymous with lifestyle and celebration.

While the French toast with Champagne, the world celebrates with Prosecco – because greatness isn’t declared, it’s uncorked.
